Volvo XC40 vs. XC60: Compare Volvo's Compact Luxury Crossovers

The New Volvo XC60 vs. Volvo XC40: Which is Best for You?

With exquisite accommodations, engaging performance, and inimitable style, Volvo SUVs are among the most appealing luxury models on the road. Volvo SUVs offer roomy seating, practical utility, and cutting-edge tech features. And Volvo's sophisticated Scandinavian design and craftsmanship is a fresh face in a sea of relative uniformity.

For discerning Eastern Pennsylvania drivers seeking a premium SUV without imposing space requirements, Volvo offers two small crossover options: the subcompact Volvo XC40 and compact Volvo XC60. While similar in some ways-including number of seats and IntelliSafe driving aids-they each have unique attributes to suit different needs and preferences. To help determine the best method for you, here's an overview of their distinguishing characteristics.

Design

The XC40 and XC60 are both small 5-seat SUVs offering excellent versatility and city-friendly maneuverability. But despite their "compact" designation, each offers surprisingly spacious accommodations, with ample headroom and legroom in both rows. In terms of styling, the smaller SUV has a sportier look, with a more upright front fascia, deeper panel sculpting, a horizontally creased grille. It also features a distinct "Thor's Hammer" DRL design, dynamic taillights, and a more prominent rear spoiler. The XC60 has a more executive aesthetic with clean lines and refined yet assertive fascia.

With all seats in use, the XC40 reserves 21 cubic feet for storage behind the second row, and up to 58 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The XC60's cargo configurations measure from 30 to 65 cubic feet.

Performance

If you select from our Volvo XC40 inventory, you'll have a choice of powertrains. There are two turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines: the FWD T4 (187 horsepower, 221 pound-feet of torque) and the AWD T5 (248 hp, 258 lb-ft). And then there's the XC40 Recharge, a potent pure-electric powertrain (402 hp, 487 lb-ft) with an EPA-estimated 223 miles of electric range.

The Volvo XC60 also offers two 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, but they're equipped with a mild-hybrid (MHEV) system for increased efficiency, decreased emissions, and smoother performance. MHEV options include the turbocharged B5 (FWD or AWD; 247 hp, 258 lb-ft) and the twincharged B6 (AWD; 295 hp, 310 lb-ft of torque).

If you're interested in dipping your feet into the world of electric automobility, Volvo offers the Volvo XC60 Recharge PHEV in two levels. The Recharge T8 pairs the twincharged four-cylinder with an electric motor to produce an AWD 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. This 11.6-kWh battery enables an EPA-estimated 19 miles of pure-electric range. Finally, there's the XC60 Polestar Engineer with a higher-tuned version of the Recharge powertrain (415 hp and 494 lb-ft) and additional performance upgrades like Öhlins suspension dampers, Akebono front brakes, and summer tires.

Technology

The XC40 and XC60 are similarly equipped when it comes to technology. Each offers a long list of features as standard equipment, including an advanced infotainment system and Volvo IntelliSafe driver aids. So, no matter which model or trim you select, you'll enjoy the added convenience and confidence of cutting-edge technologies like:

  • 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
